4.2 Benefits Wait Times

Disability Benefits Timeline

It is a long process to get approved for Social Security Disability (Title II) or SSI (Supplemental Security Income) benefits. Social Security Disability hearing wait times can range from a few months to years, depending on where in the United States the hearing takes place and other factors of your case. Once a claimant has been approved, the first monthly check usually comes within 60 days.

The Social Security disability back pay check often takes longer to process. In the case of SSI, the back pay is sent in three installments. These installments are mailed six months apart, meaning that it takes about a year to receive the entire back pay amount. In the case of disability, it can come all at once but may take a little longer (2-3 months after the first monthly check is received) if the claimant has been approved for both disability and SSI. This is because if the claimant has been approved for both SSI and Disability, the amounts offset. For more information, see Calculating Social Security Disability Benefits.
